A little bit about me . . .

Although English was not nearly my favorite subject in high school (I graduated from Smithfield Selma High in 1991), I have found an honest love of literature and writing.  Reading is a great way to escape the stress of life for a short time, explore new places, and find out the tremendous things that are happening in our ever changing world.

I am constantly working on my craft as a writer.  I enjoy scholarly and analytical writing (and I think it is crucial for me to practice what I teach), but my real love is humor.  Writing funny stories has become a way for me to cope with life and to leave a legacy to my children.  I first started seriously writing humor when I was pregnant with twins.  Hopefully they will find it as funny as I do.

This past January, I celebrated my 12th wedding anniversary with my husband Blue, a former teacher and baseball coach from R-S Central and now a successful real estate broker.  We have two amazing little girls who turned eight in March (they were born on Friday the 13th!), Sophie and Mia, second graders at Rutherfordton Elementary this year.  We love to travel - especially to sporting events.  My husband is a big Indianapolis Colts fan, so we often travel to Indy to see a game or two (this year, its LUCK vs. MANNING!) .  I am a HUGE Carolina Tarheels fan, and try to make it to Chapel Hill to watch some basketball (I have been to the Final Four to watch my Heels and was at the National Championship game last year!)  We love Boston and try to visit Fenway Park when there (home of the Red Sox!).  My favorite city, however, is New York, where I lived and worked for several years after graduate school.  The Big Apple gave me the great opportunity to work in big city theater as an actor and director, as well as teach at two prestigious colleges:  New York University and Rutgers University.  I enjoy going to visit and taking folks there to discover some of the truly great treasures of our nation.

I believe that making real-world connections is what makes learning relevant, and building relationships is what makes students passionate about school and life.  My goal as a teacher is to bring my life experiences into my classroom to help students explore the world, preparing them for life beyond the walls of high school.
